  Description
The Marin French Cheese Company has manufactured cheese in the same location for 136 years. Our factory and retail store are nestled between the California wine country north of San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean.

In 1865, Jefferson A. Thompson purchased and stocked his 700 acre ranch with Grade A cattle and began the making of California granular cheese for the up and coming market in San Francisco. Eager to be innovative, in 1900 the family decided to emulate the enterprise of a neighbor, Louis Cantel (of French Swiss derivation) and engage, as he did, in the making of Camembert and related soft ripened cheeses. Since that time, Marin French Cheese has refined the ability to produce "authentic French" cheeses with a unique California style and flavor. Many have compared the taste of our Brie and Camembert to that of a traditional European raw milk cheese, although we pasteurize all milk before use.

For more than a hundred years Marin French Cheese Company has refined it's ability to produce an "authentic French" Camembert striving for authenticity in it's hand crafted artisan process. Cheeses from Rouge et Noir are created from traditional recipes, using traditional cultures to achieve the taste and quality of true Camembert and Brie cheeses without compromise. The lover of soft ripened cheeses has a variety of Rouge et Noir selections from which to choose. Each distinctive cheese provides a fresh and unique culinary experience.

Along with our fine cheeses, we also offer over 5 acres of lawn which include picnic tables and a lovely duck pond where our customers may enjoy themselves. You can even reserve a barbecue area accommodating up to 150 guests for large parties, weddings, or receptions. And don't forget -- our retail store has a complete deli and wine selection for all your picnic supplies.
